Salamanca Woman Arrested for $20K Welfare Fraud in Olean

In a significant welfare fraud case, Bonnie L. Halliday was arrested for defrauding over $20,000 in public assistance benefits.

Olean, NY – On June 12th, 2024, at 11:27 am, the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Bureau reported the arrest of Bonnie L. Halliday, 64, of Salamanca, NY, on multiple felony charges related to welfare fraud. The arrest took place at the Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services located at 1 Leo Moss Drive, Olean, NY.

The investigation, led by Detective Christopher M. Ellman, stemmed from a complaint filed in April by the Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services. The complaint alleged that Halliday had fraudulently obtained $20,490.71 in public assistance benefits by concealing her receipt of Social Security Survivor Benefits.

Halliday faces charges of Grand Larceny in the Third Degree (D Felony), Welfare Fraud in the Third Degree (D Felony), and six counts of Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree (E Felony). She was taken into custody without incident, processed, and subsequently released with an appearance ticket.

Halliday is scheduled to appear in the City of Olean Court on July 16th, 2024, at 9:30 AM before Judge DiCerbo. The Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services Fraud Unit assisted in the investigation.
