CORTLAND, NY (WBNG) — The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office said it made an arrest into a fraud investigation.

The sheriff’s office said it charged Shelana L. Cooney, 26, of Cortland with welfare fraud in the third degree, grand larceny in the third degree and three counts of offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, all felonies.

The office said it concluded, along with help from the Cortland County Department of Social Services, that Cooney provided fraudulent information to the Cortland County Department of Social Services concerning her household income and composition.

As a result, she received benefits she was not entitled to more than $5,600, the office said.

Cooney was arraigned in Cortland City Court and released to reappear on Feb. 28.
